Henri Samuel: Master of the French Interior

Henri Samuel: Master of the French Interior
Wednesday, April 25, 2018 - 6:30pm - 9:00pm

Chapter meeting, illustrated presentation and book signing

Please join us with acclaimed design expert, historian, and author Emily Evans Eerdmans to celebrate the just released publication of the first book dedicated to design legend, Henri Samuel. Henri Samuel is considered one of the preeminent French interior designers of the twentieth century, acclaimed as much for his mastery of historic design, as well as his eye for contemporary presentation and furnishing. He is perhaps best known for his work for the Rothschild family, including the restoration of the château de Ferrières, and the Wrightsman Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Eerdmans will discuss Samuel’s groundbreaking and inspiring interiors, beginning with his first job assisting Stéphane Boudin of Jansen in the 1920s through postwar Paris society and into the go-go ’80s. During his illustrious career, Samuel created rarefied and beautiful environments for his jet-set clientele—Doris Duke, Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, Jayne Wrightsman, and the couturier Valentino Garavani. Samuel was a master at reproducing intimate spaces in various historical styles in addition to mixing those styles in an erudite way: modernist paintings were installed over Empire consoles, Louis XIII furniture shared space with Oriental objects, and neoclassical chairs were placed beside tables of brass and Plexiglas.

Emily Evans Eerdmans is the founder of Eerdmans Fine Art and is an acclaimed design historian whose previous books include The World of Madeleine Castaing and Regency Redux. She teaches connoisseurship and design history at the New York School of Interior Design.
