BALBOA PARK PLEIN AIR DRAWING COURSE

In collaboration with the ICAA SoCal’s NeoClassicists, the ICAA will be hosting a plein air drawing at San Diego’s California Building at Balboa Park. Built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, Balboa Park was a dream-like vision made real by Bertram Goodhue, Carlton Winslow and other notable California Architects. Based on Classical principals and Spanish inspiration, its architecture and master planning is an enduring landmark for architectural study. In particular, tower forms and Churrigueresque ornamentation, were meant to capture light and attention, an ideal subject for field drawing. This course is intended for all levels of experience and especially welcomes emerging professionals and members of the Southern California Neoclassicists.

About Serena Ettelson
Serena Ettelson, AIA, is a Studio Director and Senior Project Manager with Harrison Design in Santa Barbara, where she specializes in the rehabilitation of historic residences and the design of new homes inspired by Classical and Spanish Colonial Revival traditions. A San Diego native, her passion for architecture began while exploring the historic buildings of Balboa Park. She earned her master’s degree from the University of Colorado and joined Harrison Design in 2016.
