California Eden: Classical Design in California Landscapes

There are many untold stories in our built environment. Please join us for our upcoming webinar based on the book, California Eden: Heritage Landscapes of the Golden State, co-edited by Christine Edstrom O’Hara and Susan Chamberlin. They will look at the history of the state through the lens of cultural landscapes, in other words, landscapes that have been shaped by humans who have left their imprints on the natural world. Their talk will examine how the California landscape was transformed by the Indigenous peoples, Spanish colonizers, settlers, landscape designers, and nurserymen and women, with an emphasis on some of the essays in the book that include classical design elements.

Christine Edstrom O’Hara is a professor of landscape architecture at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She received her Bachelor of English from Stanford University, Master of Landscape Architecture from University of Washington, and PhD in Landscape Architecture from University of Edinburgh. She is the past president of the California Garden & Landscape History Society, on the Scholars Council for the Olmsted Network, and is passionate about education and conservation of historic places.

Susan Chamberlin, ASLA, is a landscape historian with a degree in Landscape Architecture from UC Berkeley and a MA degree in Architectural History from UC Santa Barbara. She is a founding member of the California Garden & Landscape History Society and has lectured, taught garden history, and contributed to books, journals, and historic resources reports.
