Hallowed Grounds: Classical monument design in a modern contemplative park

Memorial, peacock sanctuary, contemplative refuge, or concert venue: the place of the dead has played many roles, and continues to evolve as our cities and relationship to the dead change. Founded in 1899, Hollywood Forever Cemetery is one of the country’s early examples of the Nineteenth-Century’s Lawn Cemetery, designed to be an uplifting place of remembrance and a cultural center for Los Angeles. Join Heather Goers, architectural historian and historic preservation consultant, for a guided walking tour of Hollywood Forever’s classical monuments and an overview on this Cemetery’s evolution from a local cemetery to one with a global presence.

Our walking tour will start at the Hollywood Cathedral Mausoleum and follow the outer ring road, stopping at significant architectural monuments along the way. Guests will get an exclusive guided tour of the interior of the Clark Island Mausoleum, where magnate William Andrews Clark Jr. and his family are interred. The elegant Greek Revival mausoleum was constructed in 1920 of Georgia marble and was designed by architect Robert Farquhar.

Please wear comfortable walking shoes, as the terrain is grassy and uneven. We recommend sunscreen and water for the tour.
