Please join scholar and historian Christopher Long as he discusses the life and career of the German-born architect and designer Jock Peters. Born in 1889 in the farmlands of Schleswing Holstein, Germany, Peters emigrated to Los Angeles in 1922. Mr. Long’s talk will focus on how Peters, like many young German architects just before and after World War I, sought to come to terms with the classical legacy in the modern era.

The lecture will be based on Christopher Long’s newly released book, Jock Peters, Architecture and Design: The Varieties of Modernism (New York: Bauer and Dean, 2021). the first extensive survey of Peters’s work.

Christopher Long is Martin S. Kermacy Centennial Professor of Architectural and Design History at the University of Texas at Austin. He has published widely on various aspects of Central European and American modernism. His recent books include The New Space: Movement and Experience in Viennese Modern Architecture (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2016); Essays on Adolf Loos (Prague: Kant, 2019); Adolf Loos on Trial (Prague: Kant, 2017); and Adolf Loos: The Late Houses (Prague: Kant, 2020).
