Measured Drawing with Erik Evens

In the classical tradition, new buildings come from other buildings: architectural precedents are the models or springboards from which new work flourishes. Since the Renaissance, architects have sketched and measured all facets of architecture to learn from historical example via analytical and measured drawing. Studying buildings reveals ways in which architects have adapted earlier precedents and the classical canon to new programmatic and regional conditions.

This workshop introduces quick techniques for measured drawing to scale in a sketchbook through orthographic drawing of plan, section, elevation and profile for the purpose of building a resource of solutions to draw upon when addressing similar problems in contemporary design. A visual overview of the history of the architect’s measured sketchbook is followed with outdoor measured drawing. At the end of the field drawing session will be a discussion of completed sketchbook drawings.
