North Bennet St. School – Webinar

Please join the ICAA Southern California for a virtual tour of North Bennet Street School, a unique craft and trade school in Boston with the mission to prepare students for careers in traditional trades, while both preserving and advancing craft traditions. Sarah Turner, NBSS President, will share examples of the work done by the School’s Preservation Carpenters, Piano Tuners, Violin Makers, Book Binders and more. She’ll describe the ways the School offers an educational approach that values skills-training, career development, material knowledge and hand-work. We will take a glimpse into their landmark building – once a North End Police Station and a City of Boston printing facility – and now filled with specialized workshops and students of all backgrounds learning new skills.

Sarah Turner, President, North Bennet Street School
Sarah is an artist and educator trained in the Northwest, refined in the Midwest and now based in Boston. As an educator, working from both the office and the studio, Sarah has worked as the Dean at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, and as a faculty member at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Oregon College of Art and Craft, and the State University of New York at New Paltz. She has lectured widely, regularly serves as a guest critic and juror, and has organized exhibitions on contemporary applied art in the US and abroad. In 2005, Sarah was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to the Netherlands to research Dutch contemporary applied art.

Born and raised in Wooster, Ohio, Sarah received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Smith College and a Certificate in Metalsmithing from the Oregon College of Art & Craft. She earned a Masters of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
