Since Pliny the Elder ornamental plants have been shaped in gardens, which we know today as Topiary. This living sculpture has traveled the highs of lows of popularity, with artistic movements both embracing and shunning this intentionality in the landscape arts. It has been exported around the world and integrated into a multitude of new cultures and climates. Please join horticultural consultant and designer Charles King Sadler in this talk that explores the fascinating history of Topiary, which is alive and well today.

Over the course of two decades, Charles King Sadler has developed a practice for the care and restoration of landscapes that has resulted in his being sought after for work on properties across North America and by top European landscape practices. He began his career as a freelance illustrator, with a degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and applied his artistic talent to newspaper illustration for publications such as the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. Charles returned to SUNY-ESF on the campus of Syracuse University, to pursue master’s studies in Landscape Architecture, and started his own design firm in order to apply his philosophy of horticultural care within the design aesthetic.

Charles has since gone on to work specifically on the training, care and restoration of landscapes on estates from Greenwich, Connecticut, to Toronto, Ontario, to San Antonio, Texas.
